Essay model

Before beginning the process of writing an essay, it’s useful to look at the essay form theoretically, as a model.

  • A ‘model’ is a simplified representation of a system.
  • It identifies key features of the system.
  • It is a theoretical abstraction.
  • It doesn’t describe a particular example, but can be adapted for a range of applications.

An essay model is a theoretical framework that can be used as the structural basis of all essay types. The model has three structural components:

  • an introductory paragraph that introduces the essay’s thesis or ‘big idea’,
  • middle paragraphs that support this thesis and convince the reader of its validity,
  • a concluding paragraph that restates the thesis and draws together the threads of the argument presented in the essay.

The middle paragraphs support the thesis and convince the reader of its validity. Each paragraph should make one point and be linked logically.

The concluding paragraph restates the thesis and draws together the threads of the argument presented in the essay. It does not introduce new points and leaves the reader with a sense of completion.
