Section 2: Clauses

If we were to name one grammatical structure that improves writing, it would be the deliberate and creative use of clauses to form complex sentences. Sentences are complex when the main idea (simple sentence) is expanded to include information that adds to the readers’ understanding of that main idea.

In this section, we will examine four types of clauses:

  • adverb clause
  • noun clause
  • relative clause
  • conditional clause
